School Projects and other delights

Keep everyone afraid and they will consume

Food + …

I have done tons of research. It started with going raw for 31 day and blogging about it. The raw idea started to become secondary after realising how raw restaurants in the area were unwilling to talk about the raw food industry. I also went to a talk on raw food and left early after hearing the speaker tell me that school is useless and that you can cure aids and cancer if you get rid of your sorrow. He also did not mention raw food once for the 2 and a half that I was at the lecture, and the lecture was suppose to be only 4 hours long. I started discovered that there are some food rehab centres that are using raw food as a technique to cure people of their food addictions. This got me excited and I then decide that I would like to explore food addictions. Most clinics use a technique similar to alcoholic anonymous 12-step program. I have dome research on food and other addictions with my goal trying to link the two together. I have found some useful articles that link the two together and explain food addictions through drug addictions. The two have many similarities.

I know that I will use photography for this project. I want the page layout to be primarily photo based with writing flowing strategically over the photos. I am planning on shooting photos this weekend. They will display a person performing drug type acts, but with food products. I have formed list of the top ten drug addictions, top ten addictions, and the top 5 most addictive foods. The photos will be intentionally bit ridicules. I am aware that food addiction is a serious topic and should not be taken lightly, but I want the article to catch the reader’s attention and not look like the regular medical journal.

On my computer at home, I am already forming and constructing how I would like to write the article.  I want the article to be straight to the point and direct. I have read that it is easier for humans to read a text with serif, therefore depending on how long the article ends up being, this will influence weather or not I use a font with a serif.

I like very clean designs. I am a fan of how the Dazed & Confused and Wonderland magazine are organized. However, for this article I feel a more organic approach will be needed. The way the text will be organized will be based on the photos and will complement the photos. It will still be clean, but not follow the strict flow of a grid.

Ian - Heavy Metal

Ian gave our class a lot of insight to day. When it comes down to design, it generally ends up being about the money and the time. Ian started out as a fine art sculptor student and moved into a paid MA in design because he could not get work at the time. How he found jobs in the beginning was just having cigarets outside of galleries. He proved again that at the end of the day, business is all about who you know and how you present your self. I find myself meeting more and more fine artists working in design. This makes me wonder if i should be studying fine art and make the transition like many designers I like.

Research on the sustainable fish city. This was important research because we found out what their objectives are, the style of the site and links the site offers. We now are staring to get an idea of what kind of app can be possible for this organisation.

Soho is the place to be

Soho is a really interesting area full of fantastic restaurants and bars, interesting clothing stores, good tattoo parlors and has many businesses in the digital media field. I find that it is one of the easier places to get around in London because it the streets are in more of a grid structure. The people in this area are friendly and are just looking to have a good time and create something wonderful. This design hub is a great place to hang around and get inspired. I have been to a few pubs in the area and found that one can easily meet graphic designs, artists, writers, and people in the film and advertising industry.

Typography: For this project my audience was design students. I felt in order to attract design students, the book jacket must have little to no decoration and must be well thought out. I choose to do a simple and clean black and gray book jacket, where the title crossed over the front and the back of the book. I thought that this could create an interesting design display in a bookshop and the simplicity of the design would make it stand out. For my other book jacket, I thought about how most design books look great on coffee tables, have solidness to them and are obviously design books. I wanted to create a book that was opposite of that. I wanted to create a book that looked a bit more like an older hard cover novel. The fact that this book looks like it should be placed in the classics section would make this book stand out on the bookshelf in the design section.

Visual Communications: For this project I felt that it was important to keep the integrity of Sierra Leone and Book Aid for Africa. A deck of cards reflects a monarchy; therefore I linked this with the idea of the animal kingdom. To further link this to Sierra Leone, I chose animals that populate Sierra Leone to represent the animal kingdom. I made the cards with the animals to be image dominant and designed to apple to a younger audience. Book Aid for Africa encourages reading; therefore, all the animals are reading books. I also explored type focused cards which could appeal to a more mature audience. These cards do not use images except for the pattern on the back of the card. I designed patterns for the back of all the cards to relate to Africa and Book Aid for Africa. I decided to use book aid for Africa colours and to make the continent of Africa out of books. All together, I feel that these cards relate to the charity and the country in which the charity is helping.
